Wasting More Than Half of My Life Waiting for the Weekend

by | Aug 14, 2023

Many of us are familiar with the saying, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” But it wasn’t until I looked at my week through percentages that this phrase took on a deeper, more personal meaning.

The Monday Blues – 14% of My Life

Like many dads, Mondays felt like the mountain I had to climb each week. Representing the end of the weekend and a return to the daily grind, my aversion to Mondays meant I was essentially dismissing 14% of my life.

Tiresome Tuesdays – 14% of My Life

Tuesdays never offered the newness of Mondays or the mid-week hope of Wednesdays. They were just another tick on the countdown to freedom. Regrettably, my indifference towards Tuesdays meant another 14% of my life was merely spent waiting.

The Humpday Wait – 14% of My Life

Wednesdays, or Humpdays, were a brief beacon of hope, signaling that the week was halfway done. But instead of celebrating this milestone, I was just eagerly anticipating the weekend, which meant another 14% of my life in waiting.

The Friday Anticipation – 28% of My Life

By the time Thursday and Friday rolled around, my focus was almost entirely on the weekend. The tangible excitement for the upcoming days off consumed 28% of my life, overshadowing the joys of these weekdays.

The Sunday Dread – 7% of My Life

Sunday evenings were paradoxical. While part of the weekend, they were tinged with the dread of Monday morning. This weekly apprehension stole another 7% of my life.

The Reality Check

When I added these up, I was astonished to realize that 77% of my life was either being dreaded or merely endured in anticipation of something seemingly better.

Especially as fathers, we must set the right example for our children. If we’re continually waiting for the next best thing, what are we teaching them?

It’s time to change this narrative.

Every day presents opportunities to grow, learn, connect, and create memories with our families.
