My mentor recommend this $6 investment.
He knew the ROI.
And he knew the pain of not taking the time to invest in the most meaningful areas of life.
It was the first book that I had picked up in years.
I decided to read it on a long flight.
It was Sam Walton’s book Made in America.
I was fascinated to learn about one of the richest men in our history.
How he took pride in driving his dented Ford around Bentonville.
How he defied logic and went against the tried and true principles of the retail industry.
Sam chose to do it his way, stunning and bankrupting many of his critics along the way.
He put it all on the line to constantly improve his stores and had the vision to grow even after he had tasted great success.
He taught lessons of confidence, creativity, and how to serve your customers and give them an experience.
One day, when he needed to sell a large amount of popcorn, he started by giving it away on the street in front of his Bentonville store.
He took his popcorn machine outside and let the buttery aroma waft through the streets.
It helped him sell a record amount that day.
His customers and associates loved him.
HIs competitors…Not so much.
He accomplished what no others had and revolutionized an industry.
…and here he was on his deathbed, writing to the next generation,
Still remembering to give value.
He wanted folks to know,
If Sam Walton can do it,
Anyone can.
The last chapter, though, was the most meaningful to me.
As successful as he was, Sam Walton acknowledged that even though he had amassed a fortune,
He blew it.
He recognized that he didn’t invest quality time with his wife, his children, and his grandchildren.
He was too busy building Wal-Mart!
And he deeply regretted it.
I invested six dollars and half of a day learning from a billionaire that a failure to spend quality time with those that mean the most to you could lead to a life filled with deep regret.
And…despite how wealthy or successful you become…
You must decide today what is most important.
Yet, sadly most don’t.
Many go to the grave each day with many regrets.
Sadly, the billionaire did.
His last words were….
“I blew it”
I can’t imagine how deeply he regretted not spending more valuable time with the ones he loved the most.
I got off the plane with my family knowing that I was right where I needed to be.
I was the wealthiest man alive.
